The ULTIMATE Breakdown - Ross Ulbricht, The Silk Road, & The Government's Case Against Ross

Julian & Attorney, Kevin Gallagher, give the ultimate breakdown of the government’s case against the Founder of The Silk Road, Ross Ulbricht. The Silk Road (2011-2013) was a libertarian deep web platform. where users could freely buy and sell drugs online. It was created in an effort to give drug users a safer alternative to buy drugs—and as a direct rebuke against the failures of the War on Drugs. The website relied on the private web browser, Tor, for users to access it anonymously and all sales were made in Bitcoin (BTC) to keep the money trail anonymous as well. In 2013, Ross was arrested by the US Government after the FBI, DEA, Homeland Security, and IRS all worked together to identify him as The Silk Road’s Leader—a user who called himself “The Dread Pirate Roberts.”

What followed was a shady trial as the government brought their case against Ross to court in the Southern District of New York and subsequently won. Despite the fact that Ross was found guilty of non-violent drug crimes, the judge presiding over the case controversially sentenced him to double life, without the possibility of parole. In the years since the case, millions around the world have joined Lyn Ulbricht’s (Ross’ mother) movement to Free Ross from prison (via a commutation or pardon from the US President). In this podcast clip from TRENDIFIER w/Julian Dorey #31, Julian and Kevin breakdown the case step-by-step and analyze how everything turned out.
