Was Silk Road Founder, Ross Ulbricht, RAILROADED By The Government?

Show notes

Podcast Clips: Julian and Attorney, Kevin Gallagher, discuss Silk Road Founder, Ross Ulbricht, and the government’s case against him. Many believe that Ross was railroaded as he was not even charged with the most serious crimes the government had accused him of (murder for hire). Given that the case was high-profile and the murder for hire story was pushed by government agencies upon Ross’ arrest—many feel that Ross was not given a fair shake.

The Silk Road website, for those who are unfamiliar, was a deep web hub where users could sell and buy drugs (among other illegal items) anonymously by using the Tor web browser and trading with the digital currency Bitcoin (which in the 2011-2013 years of the Silk Road’s operation, was a very new concept). Ulbricht allegedly created the site (which seems to be confirmed at this point) out of an interest in fighting back against the failed War on Drugs. Prior starting Silk Road, Ross had long been an adamant libertarian who believed in freedom of the individual over power of the state. In his mind, Silk Road was the ultimate freedom and privacy pushback against what he deemed to be an out-of-control government.

Despite the fact that Ross only founded the site, he was found guilty and sentenced to a double life term in prison (when the crimes he was found guilty of pointed to a much lighter sentence). The controversy surrounding the government’s case against him had to do with the dropped charges of murder for hire, questions about how the government accessed the Silk Road servers (did they illegally hack into them?), AND the fact that there is evidence the government believed there were multiple Dread Pirate Roberts (the username Ross used on Silk Road)—while they claimed in the trial that Ulbricht was the only one.

Ulbricht was a candidate for a Presidential Commutation via Former President, Donald Trump, at the end of his term in 2021, but he did not receive one and remains in jail. Between the commutation possibility and the upcoming Silk Road 2021 feature film, there has been a renewed in interest in Ross’ case. Recently, the director of the upcoming movie, Tiller Russell, joined Joe Rogan on his podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience (JRE) to discuss Ulbricht’s case and the questions surrounding it.
